Large wooden insects are set to invade Trowbridge Town Hall this summer, as classically-trained sculptor Alex Jones has been gathering a selection of his best beasts from museums and private collections to showcase his body of work in the West Country.

His practice aims to convince the viewer of the unappreciated beauty of insects by playing with scale. Beatles become more like tanks and the common house spider, often found loitering in baths, becomes an elegant eight foot diameter, alien-like creature, carved in oak and black walnut.

When Alex appeared on the BBC programme Spring Watch, Chris Packham described the work as “absolutely magnificent!”

Wiltshire College Trowbridge respond to the Trowbridge in Bloom initiative currently running in the town by entering work to the Natural Word exhibition in the cells at Trowbridge Town Hall.

Previously work has been exhibited in the Shires Shopping Centre, however following the highly successful exhibition of Dying Matters in which second-year students responded to a brief given to them by Dorothy House Hospice Care, which was held in Trowbridge Town Hall cells last month Trowbridge Arts are delighted to be hosting this next exhibition in the same space.

The theme for the work is 'Natural World' and the students were allowed to pick from one of three categories for the basis of their work.

1.    Hidden Places: Celebrate the beauty and mystery of secret natural places.

2.    Organic Forms:  Selecting from a primary basis such as plants, flowers, seed heads, shells, pebbles or rocks.

3.    Miniature Plant Pot Garden.

There are twenty-one students involved in the exhibition, creating everything from paintings to fashion.

Trowbridge in Bloom judges will be assessing the work on the 18 June. There will be prizes awarded for first, second and third place, and each students will recieve a certificate for participating in the exhibition.
