What do you do when you have the worst year of your life? Well, if you’re a theatre-maker, you make a show…

After twenty years of life the UK, American-born playwright, performer and theatre-maker Alison Farina spent nearly eight months in the USA from 2017 to 2018 dealing with the aftermath of a family trauma.

Isolated, depressed and alone in the ‘home’ she no longer recognised or understood, she found herself navigating the US Health Care System, clearing out her family home (full of memories and thirteen years of hoarding), figuring out how to pay for two Care Facilities and (mostly!) driving on the right.

Through humour, music and the odd ‘Over-Sharing-Facebook-Post’, the show will examine some of the issues that arose from this experience; ageing, healthcare, the parent/child relationship, cultural identity, memory, legacy, mental health & how to go forward after a traumatic experience – all the ingredients of a fun family visit!

Working with Siouxsie Easter (Professor of Theatre, Wells College, New York) and Dionne Draper (Sing with Soul), Alison Farina, will be working at Town Hall Arts on a 2-week R&D Residency to develop her new one-woman-show, Lobster Tale, a story of love, family and seafood.

At the end of the Residency, the team will have an open showing at Town Hall Arts on February 22nd at 7pm with a Feedback/Q&A session directly afterwards.

This project is part of Creative Wiltshire’s Fest West 2019, with R&D Support provided by Town Hall Arts and is funded with a Grant for the Arts from Arts Council England.
