Subversive Surfaces Workshop

June 30, 2018 @ 10:00 AM

Trowbridge Town Hall
Market Street, Trowbridge, BA14 8EQ
Price: Free
Company: Gina Baum and Lou Baker

In Subversive Surfaces Gina Baum and Lou Baker seek alternatives to traditional representations of the body, examine taboos associated with interior and exterior, and reflect on attitudes toward healthcare.

Gina Baum combines experience acquired as a nurse and her current artistic practice, to create conversations around health and ill health in a continually changing world. Her fragile porcelain sculptures and muslin works challenge the viewer’s understanding of vulnerability and trust.

Lou Baker provokes conflicting responses with her large soft sculptures which tread the line between horror and humour, as they make public that which is usually private. Baker is a facilitator as well as a maker, instigating conversations with her audiences and enabling them to participate.

Baum and Baker bring together exquisitely delicate porcelain forms and soft textile sculptures, in an exhibition which embraces the many unique exhibition spaces within Town Hall Arts. There will be artworks to explore in the main gallery, the basement cells and the entrance lobby.

Subversive Surfaces also provides opportunities for visitor participation. An installation in the basement cells will encourage people to reflect on what makes them comfortable and uncomfortable. Furthermore, a free drop-in workshop on 30th June will give participants the opportunity to work with the artists, experiment with various materials, and contribute to a collaborative “subversive surface” in the entrance lobby.

The free drop-in workshop on 30th June starts at 10 am and finishes at 2pm, there is no need to book.
