The first event of Trowbridge Arts Festival for 2015

Virtuoso violinist and Fiddle player, Peter Knight, stalwart of British Folk-Rock pioneers Steeleye Span is bringing his own trio, Gigspanner, to Trowbridge as part of their current tour on 19 March 2015.  This is the first event for Trowbridge Arts Festival for 2015, with the full Festival fortnight taking place from the 16 October to 1 November 2015.

Peter, who has been with Steeleye Span for the past 43 years, originally formed the trio as a fairly casual arrangement when he was still living in Hastings. However, the Band's unique chemistry and outstanding musicianship won an army of loyal followers, and it became obvious that the music was worthy of a much wider audience.

The trio has since been hailed by Songlines magazine as "another milestone in folk's rebirth of cool", but those in the know will tell you that there is more to Gigspanner than meets the eye.

Now established as a powerful presence on the UK concert and festival scene, the trio's unique and dazzling approach to traditional and world music is attracting the attention of music lovers and the music press alike. Their Debut album Lipreading the Poet was named as one of the best 15 Global albums of 2009, and their follow up album Doors at Eight (Live) received a string of 5 star reviews.

Without doubt, a bedrock of British traditional music is to be expected from Steeleye Span's erstwhile legendary fiddle player. But, Gigspanner's musical reach flirts audaciously with Eastern European, French, Cajun, African and even Aboriginal influences, transporting audiences on a "blistering pace of a musical world tour" (Phil Widdows, Folkcast). It is appropriate then that author Terry Pratchett wrote that "Peter Knight can spin the world on his Bow"

Ultimately, the music Gigspanner produces confounds any attempt to label it, and it is that intriguing, indefinable ingredient that continues to inspire audiences of all leanings, bringing them back for more. As a trio they have successfully amalgamated the diverse sum of their parts, and have honed and polished a brand that is uniquely theirs.

Finding the perfect vehicle to showcase the breadth of his virtuosity, Peter's musicianship within the context of Gigspanner is a revelation to those whose only experience of his playing has been limited to Steeleye Span.

Peter is joined by Roger Flack on Guitar, and Vincent Salzfaas on Congas and Djembe, both intelligent and powerful musicians in their own right. Together they promise "a blistering pace of a flamboyant musical world tour" (Lancashire Evening Post).

What Peter and Roger have in common is an unwavering, single minded commitment to dig deep and to load the music with something of value. Gigspanner's audience knows that it is being honoured with a gift that is the difference between 'entertaining' and 'spellbinding'.

But, leave any pre-conceived ideas at the door, and ditch the pigeonholes. If you have a taste for "music of intelligently crafted brilliance" (Songlines magazine) there is something here to nurture your soul.

"Intelligent, multi-lingual music making. Gigspanner are marking out a distinctive zone of their own" Julian Cowley, The Wire

"The Trio co-creates a depth of multi-textured melody that belies the pared-down instrumental line-up.  Exceptional stuff, and not to be missed" Noel Harvey, Acoustic Magazine

Gigspanner will be playing at Trowbridge Town Hall on Thursday 19 March, with tickets priced £12 on sale from http://www.trowbridgeartsfestival.co.uk/events2/item/gigspanner.html or in person from the Town Hall, Mon, Tue, Thu – Sat 10am – 4pm or from the Trowbridge Information Centre Mon – Sat 9am – 4pm, or on 01225 774306 / 01225 465072.
